Before reading
1 Group work: Divide the class into groups. Ask
groups what the front cover of the reader is trying to
say about the book and how well it does this. Make
sure they think about the style of the letters as well as
the picture. What does the cover tell them about the
plot or the themes? Write the main points on the
board.
2 Discuss: Ask the students to work in pairs. They read
the information about The Hound of the Baskervilles
in the Introduction and discuss the following: What
secrets could the people Watson meets at Baskerville Hall
have? Why could the newly arrived Sir Henry Baskerville
be in danger? Do you believe that ghostly hounds exist
out in the moors?
Then get them to share their views.
