top manager of the unit announced that a long-term effort to change the
organizational culture of the unit was going to occur, primarily in terms of the
nature of the relationship among managers, supervisors, first-line supervisors,
and hourly workers. Having made this announcement at a meeting of all
managerial, supervisory, and professional employees, the top manager
displayed his personal feedback from the MLQ and explained his
understanding of the areas in which he needed to improve to be a more
effective leader and his tentative plans in that regard. He announced that the
leadership improvement effort would start with himself and his senior
management, but would not proceed until he felt that they had a good
understanding of what they wanted others in the unit to do and were ready to
try to model those behaviors.
