Our main aim was to investigate the extent to which vermicomposting and windrow composting of green waste may be combined in order to maximise the potential of both processes. A combination of aerobic composting and vermicomposting has already been proposed by Graziano and Casalicchio (1987) to enhance the value of the final products. Frederickson and Knight (1988) have demonstrated that vermiculture and anaerobic systems can be combined to enhance organic matter stabilisation. The benefits of a combined system to process green waste could include effective sanitisation and pathogen control due to an initial period of thermophilic composting, enhanced rates of stabilisation plus the production of earthworms and vermicompost.
