Environmental Stewardship Scheme – this pays farmers who carry out environmental work, eg maintaining stone walls and hedgerows to provide food and shelter for wild flowers, birds, insects and mammals.
Some farmers are finding it more difficult to make good profits. Supermarkets are powerful buyers and they try to reduce the amount they pay farmers to keep costs to customers down. Falling profits has led many farmers to diversify. This means they use their land and facilities for other activities that can make money, eg holiday apartments or golf courses.
