The narrator is at a bridge, watching refugees flee before the advance of the Fascist army in Italy. An old man has stopped to rest next to the bridge. The narrator directs the man to continue in order to avoid the approaching military force. The old man explains that he has left his home village, where he was retired and was looking after animals. At the age of seventy-six, the man has nowhere to go and no one to turn to, and he has given up on escaping from the army.
- old man in no rush to leave
-others around him are evacuating the area as fast as they can.
-soldier's job is to check to see where the enemy is (we can infer that they will be there any minute.
-soldier decides to have a conversation with the old man. We inferred that he just wants him to leave, doesn't really want to have a conversation with him.
"From San Carlos"
-through conversation, we learn that the old man is from a small isolated town.
-he takes cares of animals
-his animals are like his only family
-he had to leave them, wonders if any of them will survive.
- he is worried about "the others" not the cat."
- we made an inference that he is trying to mimic the soldier. he will let them figure it out, see who survives, because the soldier has to look out for himself.
The old man and his animals
It is Easter Sunday
-The old man leaves saying, "I was just taking care of animals."
- he begins to walk after the soldier re-assures him that his animals will be ok.
-we can infer that the old man is mocking the soldier.
-The soldier acts like he cares, but we can infer that he really doesn't because he just says, "yes they will be fine."
in the end!
The old man leaves, the fascist are getting closer, and the narrator says that "there was nothing to do about him, and the cat will take care of himself,is all the luck he could have."
