Aflatoxins are a group of secondary metabolites, produced by Aspergillus
flavus Link ex Fries and A.
parasittcus Speare, that are both acutely toxic and
carcinogenic.
Some reports have attributed aflatoxin production to other fungi, but numerous studies testing the same isolates from these reports have failed to demonstrate that any of these fungi could produce aflatoxins .
The general consensus is that aflatoxins are produced only by A. flavus and A. parasiticus.
