In this study, the use of English in print ads is regarded as a marked choice because
the normative medium (i.e., the unmarked choice) of written communication in Taiwan is
Chinese. As Shih and Sung suggest (1995), the marked form is utilized to convey some
socio-pragmatic effects whenever it is used.
