The palace occupies an area of 152 rai (i.e., 243,200 square metres or 60 acres) and is surrounded by walls with battlements. The four walls are of different lengths and form a trapezium with a perimeter of 1,910 metres. There are four gates on the north wall, three each on the east and the south and seven on the west, including four small ones. The second north gate (counting from the east), the Wiset Chaisi Gate, is the main gate leading direct to the four groups of palace buildings in the middle. The right east gate, the Sawat Sopha Gate leading to the Royal Chapel, is open on holidays only. One of the west gates leads to the backyard and is closed to outside people.
