The process of bringing new people into an organization is an essential one and a key link in the series of human resources practices a manager must master. The processes of finding and choosing people are generally called recruiting and selecting. In some ways, they can be compared to marketing and selling. Marketing is that set of activities designed to inform and excite a potential customer to use a product or service, and selling is the set of skills needed to convert that interest into a purchasing act. I a similar way, recruiting is that set of activities used to inform and attract a potential employee, while selection is the set of skills needed to convince the applicant to become an employee and for the employer to determine whether or not the applicant has the ability to become successful in the job that must be filled.
