Much of this sensitivity comes from displaying the ‘good manners’ we expect from guests in our own cultures. For example, when invited to someone’s house, we take a small gift of greeting and gratitude. We should do the same when we are away from home. Gift exchange is particularly important in Bhutanese society – it’s a Buddhist concept – Bhutanese never go ‘empty handed’. When I asked the editor of Bhutan’s beautiful magazine, The Raven, which local custom she wished visitors would adopt, it was this one.
