The phase of ‘analytical cubism’ is seen in picasso’s ‘woman with a mandolin’ in which the subject is analysed from many different viewpoints and reconstructed within a geometric framework, the effect of this was to create an image that evoked a sense of the subject. These fragmented images were unified by the use of a subdued and limited palette of colours. All of this is involved in Picasso’s painting and the use of this portrays the woman to be coming forward in the painting, which seems strange as there is a lack of 3-dimensional shapes in the woman. Picasso creates this sense by his use of tone to create depth in the image. I feel this is effective as it creates mystery and wonder into why he wants the woman to be the subject of the image. I also like his abstract use of rounded shapes to create a more feminine look to his painting.
