Securing backup tapes in an OASIS specialist off-site media vault is a great way to prevent data from being lost. However, if a backup tape is damaged or for any other reason it cannot be read, you no longer have access to your valuable data.
In most instances data recovery is performed by retrieving media tapes and restoring data using your own IT systems. However, sometimes this may not be enough and a third party specialist is needed. These are some examples of times you may need the help of an expert partner:
• You have older tapes and the backup/restore infrastructure has changed, no longer supporting the type of tape or backup format;
• You want to change your backup/restore environment but do not want to retain legacy systems and the expertise to manage them;
• An urgent restoration requirement arises and you do not have the available capacity to service it; for example a court case or regulatory demand requires the restoration of large volumes of historical email data in a very short time frame;
• You have acquired another company who have a different backup/restore method or infrastructure and you do not wish to retain it, but access to the data may be required;
• Data is placed on old, historical tapes, which are now (partially) damaged and thus unreadable.
OASIS has the capacity to deal with any data recovery request, from an ad-hoc emergency requirement up to cataloguing and maintaining a database of historical media and its contents with service level agreements for regular restoration work.
OASIS possess specialist knowledge, proven techniques and state-of-the-art equipment to recover the media no longer retrievable and save it in an accessible media format.
Data Conversion and Migration
Whilst in many cases data has a finite lifespan, some data must be retained for a period longer than the lifespan of the available technology on which the data is stored. For example, a company might have a set of DLTIV or LTO1 media tapes containing data that requires a 100 year retention period, but the data is stored using a backup application that is obsolete. Rather than attempting to retain ancient technology and the skills to use it, OASIS can migrate the data to more modern media.
Data Recovery
Worldwide, data storage on computer tapes is not only used for back-up of IT environments but also for the storage of large amounts of data that have a "shelf life" of many years, as it is the case for scientific surveys, satellite or geographical data.
7, 9 and 21 track tapes are the first tapes that were commercially available many years ago when the digital back up of media began. Since then, companies in a wide variety of industries used tens of millions of tapes to store valuable data.
At the beginning of the 80's manufacturers looked into increasing the capacity of tapes. They achieved it by making the tapes thinner, enabling them to put a significant amount of additional tape around a reel. The change in the production process and thus the disruption of the delicate balance of chemical components had an unexpected and potentially disastrous effect. This effect is now well known, particularly by companies in the oil and gas industry who stored their geographic data on these tapes.
The effect of a chemical reaction of the oxide on the tape causes a stickiness effect internationally known as "Stiction". This can result is the loss of many years of valuable data if the tapes are not treated in time and in the correct manner.
OASIS specialise in the recovery of these tapes, as well as a wide range of other tapes, by utilizing a unique recovery process that transforms illegible data into once again readable data. With our unique processes OASIS ensure maximum data recovery. OASIS is one of only three companies in the EU that can offer this type of data recovery.
