Figure1.12 shows what happens when we change our focus. On Figure1.12 (a) the pictuer in the camera viewfinder is clearly that of just two individuals on the beach. As we pull our camera back, the picture changes. By (c) the individuals have been lost in the crowd and by (d) even the crowd is on longer visible. But notice that by (e) a new feature, the hook shape of Cape Cod on New England’s coastline ,has come into view. Finally this too disappears(g), and a new feature, the globe itself ,comes into sharp focus(h).So, as geographers stand back from the beach, new spatial realities emerge. Just as with a painting , you to be the right distance away to see its meaning. For this depends on the level of detail, the spatial resolution, that can be seen. Stand too close and the painting becomes a jumble of individual brush marks. Stand too far away and all you can see is a blurred rectangle of canvas on the distant wall.
