I was at a 1st birthday party today and the birthday girl's grandmother couldn't understand why I wouldn't let my 14 month old have any chocolate. She said that it was good for babies and contained vitamins they need. I said that I was concerned about the amount of sugar in chocolate and all those empty calories being consumed not like fruit that contains a more healthy, slow-burning sugar. She then told me that chocolate is better than fruit because fruit is acidic and rots teeth, which I suppose is true but I don't see that it's a problem if LO's teeth are brushed regularly.
I know that dark chocolate contains some good stuff if it's eaten in moderation but I can't imagine children enjoying the bitter flavour of chocolate without sugar. I'm not overly bothered about what this woman said but it has made me wonder if maybe I am being a bit over-protective when it comes to sweet treats.
Just interested to know how other people feel about the subject? I was hoping to keep Sophia away from chocolate for as long as possible!
