fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum (INF WP LAB2; 5 pens); and (6) infection and fed WP fermented with Weissella viridescens (NF wP LAB3; 5 pens). Infection was performed on days 2 and 3 (day 1 was the day of weaning and the start of the experiment) on piglets from groups 2 to 6. Each piglet was inoculated with 5 x 107 colony forming units (cfu) E. coli o149: in 20 mL 0.9% sodium chloride (Nacl) via an orogastric tube (Sugiharto et al., 2014). Piglets from group 1 (negative contro) received equivalent amounts of 10x Nahlco3 via an orogastric tube. The experiment complied with the guideline of the Danish Ministry of Justice with respect to experimentation and care of animals under study.
