L-carnitine increases fatty acid oxidation in two independent ways: it increases fatty acid translocation to mitochondrial
matrix by stimulating exchange of acyl-CoA/carnitine through carnitine-palmitoyl transferase type I (CPT-I) (Figure 3) and also decreases acetyl-CoA levels by generation of acetyl-carnitine, a reaction catalyzed by acetylcarnitinetransferase.
