Unlike granites and their cousins, the syenites contain little or no quartz, but neither do they have large
amounts of mafic minerals like peridotite and gabbro. Together, the syenites and their cousins make up a
group called the alkaline igneous rocks, many of which are rich in [eldspatboids, or '[oids', such as
nepheline. The small amounts of mafic minerals they do contain are often in beautiful blues or greens.
