Through a systematic study of the deposition process, conditions were determined under which coatings with a controlled and reproducible porosity were obtained. Indeed, coatings with porosities of the order of 1000 times greater than a fully dense material were produced [26]. Further, as shown in Fig. 2, the temperature at which these coatings spontaneously reacted in air was shown to be dependent on the effective surface area of the films, as determined by AC impedance testing. Films of this type have a number of diverse potential applications, such as catalysts, pyrophoric devices, or non-reflective coatings.
