Setting specific exercise-related goals that are relatively easy to achieve has
been shown to increase aquatic exercise adherence in people with arthritis. In addition, as people improve in their ability to exercise in the aquatic environment, adherence to exercise
increases. Strategies that may promote self-efficancy include beginning slowly with exercises that are easily accomplished, progressing exercise programs slowly, and providing frequent encouragement. Our program was designed to educate participants about the appropriate progression of aquatic exercises, thus optimizing the ability of people to adjust resistance and advance the program themselves or modify it according to symptoms
