This study demonstrated the possibilities of liquid biofuels (biodiesel
and bioethanol) production from an indigenous microalga S.
bijugatus. Mass cultivation of alga in semi-continuous mode using
tubular photobioreactor enhanced the biomass and lipid productivity.
A technique involving coagulation and flocculation was
tested to harvest the biomass. The algal lipids containing high
FFAs were converted into biodiesel through a sequential stage of
esterification and transesterification process to obtain significant
biodiesel yields.
