The majority of women who did not roast injected medicines considered hot(because of the stinging sensation when injected), including B vitamin complexes, vitamin C, intravenous fluids, calcium, antibiotics, and strychnine. These injected substances were considered to have the same effect on their bodies as roasting. Some rural women maintained that roasting was superior to injections for women who engaged in physically demanding work, while others stated they roasted only because they could not afford to buy injectable medicines.
