ALBERT J. DUNLAP
Dunlap was born in 1936 and grew up in Hoboken, New Jersey. His father, who spent his entire working life as a boilermaker at Todd Shipyards in Hoboken and earned a comfortable income, was a passionate union member and served as a union steward. Dunlap's parents taught him the importance of not wasting money; his mother was a strict disciplinarian who set tough goals and objectives and insisted that Dunlap and his sister follow the rules. According to Dunlap, his family offered constant encourage¬ment and believed in his future. The family moved from an apartment in Hoboken to a house in nearby Hasbrouck Heights when Al was a teenager. Dunlap liked sports, was named to the Bergen County all-star football team while in high school, and won a title as shot put champion as well. Dunlap graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1960, at which time his parents gave him a new Pontiac Bonneville convertible and a vacation in Europe. He did not enjoy his time as a West Point cadet and hated engineering, but he was determined to graduate because of his competitive¬ness and because he believed it was the right, and smart, thing to do.
