Table II lists the age in months, gender, blood collection site,
and the toxicology findings in blood for all 10 cases. Tables
III-XI list the toxicology results of all specimens analyzed in
each case, except for case 9, which only had femoral blood
available for analyses. A single OTC cold medication-type drug
was detected in only one of the cases (case 6). This case involved
prolonged hospitalization prior to death, and other drugs could
have been present at the time the infant presented to the hospital.
All of the other cases involved the detection of multiple
OTC cold-type medications with ephedrine and pseudoephedrine
findings in every case. Only one of the cases (case
7) had drug levels that were not considered to be contributory
to the cause of death based on the autopsy findings. Case 10 also
had toxic levels of metoclopramide (8) in addition to the OTC
cold medications
