Reasons for a delay in diagnosis can vary
greatly, depending on how important the
patient and/or physician perceive the new
symptoms to be, especially if there is a
previous history of LBP. The main reasons
for a delay in diagnosis include (Shapiro,
2000; Hussain et al, 2003; Jalloh and Minhas,
2007; Qureshi and Sell, 2007; McCarthy et
al, 2007):
■■Referral to an inappropriate speciality
■■ Inappropriate advice from neurological/
orthopaedic team
■■ Incorrect diagnosis/inappropriate initial
management
■■No beds available
■■Late presentation
■■Condition complicated by medical
comorbidities
■■MRI scans not available.
