Ritz (2010) discussed possible mechanisms for linking air pol- lution to autoimmunity disorders, such as T1D. If air pollution can influence the immune system and trigger other hypersensitivity disorders, such as allergy, it is, according to Ritz (2010), an in- dication that more research in the field of autoimmunity and air pollution is needed. The possible biological mechanisms through which air pollution could influence the development of T1D could be through the role of oxidative stress, which could lead to the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and thus spill over to the systemic circulation and facilitate autoimmune responses (Ritz, 2010).
