In my art I aim to activate and uplift human souls through transformed elements and traditional Japanese symbolism. Past and present meet to create a contemporary dialog conveying my own passion for life and eternal wish for positive engagement with the world.
My current works are focused on Japanese Character Paintings and Fusion Ikebana.
About three thousand characters derived from the Chinese are used in the standard Japanese language today. I explore these characters utilizing Western modes of contemporary expressionistic style using mixed media. I have chosen characters that have positive and inspiring messages such as "Passion for Life", "Go Forward" and "Infinite Growth". I have attempted to express these meanings in my paintings as well as to show the beauty inherent in the individual characters. I have retained the character's basic structure, but have combined multiple characters and artistically modified the shapes. The characters take on an accentuated meanings as well as becoming more artistic.
Fusion ikebana explores modernistic painting, formal sculptural explorations and Japanese Ikebana in a contemporary expressionistic style. Some of these works are an expansion of my Japanese Character Paintings and others are independent of my past work. I use organic material such as trees, branches other various wood, recycled glass, acrylic sheets, cylinders and rods. In order to express positive intangible themes such as "Enthusiasm", "Perseverance" and Infinite Growth as well as esthetic beauty, I modify the elements by painting and transforming the materials into an Integrated whole. Another important factor to express this theme is the usage of Japanese symbolism such as a pine tree(perseverance), fan(infinite growth), plum blossom(hope) and so on. Ikebana (flower arrangement) originated in Japan about 450 years ago as a religious offering. It has developed into a more esthetically beautiful form to enhance the everyday life of Japanese people and is central to my intent for this work. By bringing together and exploring parallel materials, I find optimism and strength in diversity.
Thus I believe the combination of two cultures can create an universal art that appeals to the viewer's heart and soul.
