According to the objective set, more than half of the partici- pants always perceived favorable behaviors of humanized care by the nursing staff who provided them with care when they were hospitalized in surgical services, highlighting qualities that characterize the professional work of nursing, such as respect without distinction of beliefs and values, that make them feel like an important person to be cared for and that patients experience tranquility during hospitalization. It was also identified that more than half of the patients always perceived an openness to communication and a disposi- tion for care, within those always perceived behaviors they emphasized that they were answered with clarity and security to the questions they asked and to indicate that if “they needed something they could call a nurse,” although they did not come in a timely manner. The results are relevant as the proposed objectives were achieved, contributing to the fundamentals and the art of nur- sing care. The production of knowledge about humanized care in the surgical environment allows nurses to think of a topic that is often unexplored in their work, due to the daily routine of this sector. This reflection may cause nurses to rethink their behaviors when providing care to surgical patients so they can ensure quality care based on humanization. And this study as others in Latin America will help acknowledge that health professionals should incorporate the principles and assump- tions of humanization, so that to establish a positive relation- ship within the context of a unit with high relevance
