Finally, a design of coastal protection structures which incorporated
needs of local communities was undertaken. Detached
breakwaters were selected and waves of 50-year return period
were used in the calculation. Breakwater length, spacing, and their
locations from the shore were primarily determined based on
criteria provided by Pilarczyk and Zeidler [18]. GENESIS, a software
package developed by US Army Corps of Engineers [19], was
utilized and calibrated with available sets of aerial photographs.
Later, the breakwaters were added into the simulations in order to
investigate their protective effects.
