Smoking is a truly very injurious to health. It causes diseases like asthma, pharyngitis and even lung cancer. It also degrades the environment causing air pollution. We also know that passive smoking is even more injurious to health. Though there are certain norms imposed by our government on smoking in public places or public transport like trains we often find that these norms are not followed by many citizens. Hence, it should be banned.
However, as we know that a large amount of revenue is collected by the government from the tobacco industry in India and a large number of poor people are dependent on this industry, such a drastic step cannot be taken suddenly which may disrupt economic harmony as well as protests from chain-smokers.
India being a democratic country such steps should be taken however with some time so as to minimize the disruption in harmony. One such way is by gradually increasing the tobacco prices in India. This will decrease the consumption of tobacco by smokers.
