Expatriate adjustment was measured by adopting the adjustment framework by Black and colleagues (Black, 1988; Black & Stephens, 1989; Black & Gregersen, 1991) and an updated version of the same scale by Shaffer, Harrison, and Gilley (1999). The expatriate adjustment scale was measured on a 7-point Likert scale (1 = Not adjusted at all, 7 = completely adjusted) with measures specifically for adjustment to work (4 items), general environment (7 items) and interaction to HCNs (4 items). The respondents were asked to rate their adjustments on several items which include ‘housing conditions’, ‘fluency of understood language’ and ‘specific assignment responsibilities’. Cronbach alpha scores for expatriate general adjustment (EGAJ) interaction adjustment (EIAJ) and work adjustment (EWAJ) are a = .91, a = .80 and a = .88, respectively.
