frequently criticise Thai royalists on my Facebook page, and I was highly critical of those who pretended to support freedom of speech after the Charlie Hebdo massacre but who condemn anyone telling the truth about the Thai monarchy.
So to be fair, I also have to publicly disagree with many of my progressive Thai friends who are arguing that Islam is some kind of evil and toxic ideology. The irony is obvious — Thai royalists also regard their opponents as evil and toxic — but some progressive Thais fail to understand their own hypocrisy. Any of us can win an argument when we set the rules — whether religious or scientific or whatever — and dismiss views that don't fit our rules as illegitimate.
Instead of denouncing those we disagree with, we should be supporting their right to say and believe whatever they want, and also asserting our right to peacefully disagree with them.
