One motive for a layoff is to eliminate wasteful salaries or redundancies in work. Mid-level managers traditionally have been a primary target of large-scale company layoffs. Companies decide that the business has too much vertical hierarchy and employees report to too many bosses. A reduction in management ranks may create a closer management to employee interaction. Some layoffs target employees doing virtually the same work as those in other departments. Removing redundancies or unproductive salaries can save a lot of money.
