Peristalsis is defined as the movements of muscles in the intestinal tract. The movements-contractions and relaxations-are the means to push the foods and waste products. The moment food or water enters the gastrointestinal tract, the surrounding muscles move in a wave-like motion that pushes the food and water through. The muscles move contract and relax in alternately. Peristalsis is a regular happening in the body as the digestive and gastrointestinal tracts function normally. The movements may either be unfelt or felt, and if it does, the movement is felt in the abdominal area.
