Much work has been done on the importance of water hyacinth Eicchornia crassipes in the purification of waste water, on its possible utilisation as fodder and on its use in the production of biogas (Wolverton & McDonald, 1979). The information available on Pistia stratiotes L. is limited to data on occurrence, physiology of growth and respiration, elemental composition and control measures using different herbicides. Work has been conducted in our laboratories on the growth characteristics of this weed in Nigerian natural water bodies which are affected by organic pollution, and on its potential use as a feed supplement for animals. An account of work carried out for over a year at Awba Lake in Ibadan, Nigeria, is presented in this paper.
