The lower row width is used for the less vigorous and bush cultivar, whereas the wider row widths are used for the more vigorous trailing cultivars.
The distance between plants within the rows is usually the same as the distance adopted between rows; although where production of the crop is fully mechanized a closer spacing between the rows is used to compensate for a wider row spacing and allows for machinery to be used during cultivations.
The sowing rate is 2-4 kg/ha depending on the plant density required.
It is normal practice to sow about three seeds per station and single the seedlings after emergence unless the seeds are sown with a precision drill.
