Wow, I've studied animals extensively, and this is only the second time I've seen this deep primatial mourning episode. This is NOT a sneezing episode. If in fact it was, like other mammals, his head would be erect or at least semi, his eyes squinting with his mouth coiled in an Involuntary semi opened position, just like you and I get when about to sneeze. If a sneezing episode were present, his head would be flailing in a repetitive motion, that semi opened mouth, with his teeth visible. This pup is lying prone, with no involuntary pre sneeze motion. His mouth in that puffing like action is his expression of mourning. Not pain... mourning. Yes, he loved his owner so much. You bet he picked up on the scent of her emanating from below. A canine can detect scents that are buried 12 plus feet in packed soil. One huge reason police departments, the military, search and rescue units use them almost exclusively in the search for bodies buried both by design and by accident. Another reason why dogs are mans best friend ! Friends to the end!
