Continuous sensing applications have a severe impact on the battery of existing smartphones, because they keep the
main processor from sleeping. To take this excessive burden off the main processor, dedicated low-power micro-controllers,
often called sensor hubs, are being integrated into smartphones [101]. Unveiled in September 2013, the iPhone5 uses its M7
motion co-processor as a sensor hub to process accelerometer, gyroscope and compass readings without involving its main
processor, the A7. We foresee that sensor hubs will become more and more common in the next few years. It is possible
that, at some point, the uptake of sensor hubs might help smartphones compete with wearable devices, which at the time
of writing are on the rise, as we discuss in the next section.
