Due to supply chain complexity, it can be difficult to categorize metrics for
evaluating SC performance (Shepherd and Gunter 2006). Earlier research has
grouped supply chain measures based on different criteria such as (a) Quantitative
and qualitative indicators, e.g. resources, output, and flexibility, as identified by
Beamon (1999); (b) Cost vs non-cost measures; and (c) Strategic, tactical, or
operational focus (Gunasekaran et al. 2001). Stephens (2001) suggested that
supply chain performance be measured by five dimensions: reliability, responsiveness,
flexibility, cost, and efficiency.
