Korea's figure skating queen Kim Yu-na wins Olympic silver in Sochi
It was indeed a happy "adios" or "good-bye" for fans of figure queen Kim Yu-na as she drew the curtain down on her career to the Argentine tango music "Adios Nonino" at the Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi.
Skating last of 24 skaters, all eyes were fixed on the defending Olympic champion as she flawlessly glided across the ice in a black and purple outfit.
However, Kim's perfect step sequence and triple flips weren't able to overcome the home field advantage as Russia's Adelina Sotnikova snatched another gold for the host country's medal list.
Despite two-footing a double loop in her combination jump, the 17-year-old Russian skater scored five more points than Kim amid a powerful wave of national emotion.
The defending Olympic champion won the silver scoring 144.1-9 for a total of 219.1-1 and graciously accepted the result.
"Although I didn't finish in first place, I'm thankful to have showed everything I could do on the ice."
Italy's Carolina Kostner, who is also retiring after the Games, claimed the bronze.
Kim's long-time rival Mao Asada of Japan finished in sixth place.
Almost as soon as Kim had left the ice, the phrase "Thanks, Kim Yu-na" topped the trending charts on Korea's main portal sites.
Korea's very vocal netizens reacted badly to the judges' scoring for Kim's performance and have taken the Internet in their droves accusing the panel of unfairly favoring the Russian skater.
U.S. news network NBC on its official Olympic website questioned the judges' scores asking its Twitter followers whether they agreed with the result.
Also, back-to-back Olympic champion Katarina Witt said although the results will not change, discussions should be held regarding the judgments.
The future is looking rosy for Korean skating however with youngsters Kim Hae-jin and Park So-youn making impressive debuts in Sochi.
They'll be aiming to hit the top spots in Pyeongchang in four years time.
