Nagpur: Pioneering research led by a Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) India Program scientist and three collaborators has established a reliable approach to predict when and where human-wildlife conflicts are likely to occur.
Analysing conflict incidents over time, the researchers revealed mechanisms that influence patterns in crop raids by elephants in their study area. The research has important implications in India, where over 400 people and 100 elephants reportedly die in conflicts annually. The novel framework established by this research will help conservation scientists better understand reasons for occurrence of these conflicts.
"Though we used elephant crop raiding as an example, the framework that we developed can be applied to understand and predict conflicts between people and all types of wildlife, including leopards and tigers," said Varun Goswami, senior research fellow. Kamal Medhi of Samrakshan Trust, JD Nichols of US Geological Survey, and MK Oli of University of Florida were the other researchers.
