CASE SUMMARY
This case examines the creation and growth of the Fuji Xerox Company, a joint venture between Fuji
Photo Film and the Xerox Corporation. The case focuses on the evolution of the firm and its changing
relationship with Xerox. It chronicles early joint operating arrangements, the growth in R&D and
manufacturing capabilities at Fuji Xerox, and the eventual transformation of the relationship from parentsubsidiary
to full partnership. These changes are described in the context of changing realities in the
nature of global competition during the last half of the twentieth century. The case concludes in 2000 as
the chairman of Fuji Xerox is contemplating a shift in the ownership structure of his firm and the
challenges such a shift would entail for the relationships between the firm and its two powerful and
important owners.
