Signs of Pre-Roman Iron Age (500 BC–1 BC) occupation around Lake
Lepinjärvi in Karjaa, SWFinland, were found at Bäljars 2 and eight previously
excavated sites, thus disproving the previously suggested hiatus
in settlement during this period. The area had excellent means of communication
with both the Baltic Sea and inland areas, via waterways
and ridges. Suitable light soils situated on a warm slope provided excellent
opportunities for cultivation. The good soil conditions at the time
were also illustrated by the presence of demanding southern species.
