Goldsworthy spent a lot of time trying to get the cracks in the stones to look just right. He wanted to make it look as if it came from within the stone, putting a lot of effort to make it look effortless. He was inspired by California’s tectonic topography, originally naming this piece Faultline. The crack signifies the delicacy of the landscape, never knowing when a natural occurrence will happen. The old de Young museum was damaged by an earthquake, and Drawn Stone was created as the new museum was built and reopened in 2005.
