work in the McMurdo Sound area of Anatarctica has given us a better understanding of community interaction in this remote area than we have for many temperate or tropical areas close to home.
In the shallow inshore waters of McMurdo Sound, Dayton, Robilliard, and Paine (1970) recognize three zone (Figure 5.46). Zone I extends 0-15 m and is essentially devoid of life, due to scouring by sea ice and the almost universal coverage by anchor ice. Only in ice-free periods can mobile organisms enter this zone.
Zone II extends from about 15 m down to the limit of anchor ice formation at approximately 30m.
