He examined the colours of thin plates, well known in bubbles and other films. By pressing a glass prism on to a lens of known curvature, the colours were formed into circles which he could measure, since called 'Newton's rings'. Using light of one colour only, the rings became alternately light and dark; it was then clear that the colours with white light were due to the abstraction of one colour after another in turn.
