The researcher met the patients scheduled for PTCA or CABG before the procedure at the hospital and talked with each patient for about an hour. Two repeat questionnaires were sent to the nonrespondents at both 1 and 8 years. The patients were not contacted by telephone, nor did they get monetary incentives. The patients who responded to the 8ycar inquiry were sent a copy of the paper reporting the results of the 1-year follow-up. The NHP quality-of-life questionnaires were mailed to the patients’ homes 1 and 8 years after the intervention. They were asked to return the questionnaire in an enclosed return envelope. Before the follow-up inquiry at 8 years, the Finnish census register was checked for data on deaths.
