Step Name
Specifies a unique name to identify the step in the inspection.
Region of Interest
Specifies the region of the image to process.
Reposition Region of Interest
Repositions the region of interest dynamically based on a coordinate system from a previous Set Coordinate System step.
Link the region of interest to a coordinate system if the position of the object under inspection changes from image to image, and you need to adjust the position of the region of interest to match the new location of the object.
Reference Coordinate System
Specifies the coordinate system to which you want to link the region of interest.
Settings Tab
You do not need to adjust the settings on this tab if the step automatically locates the expected edge.
Direction
Direction in which you want the search lines to look for an edge within the ROI.
Left to Right—Searches for edges from left to right.
Right to Left—Searches for edges from right to left.
Top to Bottom—Searches for edges from top to bottom.
Bottom to Top—Searches for edges from bottom to top.
Select a direction that is perpendicular to the edge. Select the direction that will encounter the fewest obstacles between the edge of the ROI and the edge that you want to locate.
Example
The following figure contains a vertical edge. To locate a vertical edge using the illustrated ROI, select either a Left to Right or Right to Left search direction.
Because the figure contains objects to the left of the edge, you should select a Right to Left search direction so that the first edge that the step encounters is the edge that you want to locate.

Miscellaneous Objects in the Image
Edge Polarity
Specifies the pixel intensity transition type to use to determine edges.
All Edges—Finds edges characterized by dark-to-bright and bright-to-dark pixel intensity transitions.
Dark to Bright Only—Finds only those edges characterized by dark-to-bright pixel intensity transitions along the direction of the search line.
Bright to Dark Only—Finds only those edges characterized by bright-to-dark pixel intensity transitions along the direction of the search line.
Look For
Specifies the type of edges to find in the image.
First Edge—Finds only the first edge of the specified polarity along each independent search line based on the direction of the search line.
Best Edge—Finds only the best edge of the specified polarity along each independent search line.
Auto Setup
Automatically determines values to locate the strongest edge in the region.
Disable Auto Setup to manually configure the edge location controls. Use the edge information on the Advanced tab to determine appropriate edge location settings.
Tip Click the drop-down arrow next to each control to display a list of variable values or measurements from previous steps.
Minimum Edge Strength
Specifies the minimum required difference between the intensity values of the edge and surrounding pixels.
Kernel Size
Specifies the size of the edge detection kernel.
Projection Width
Specifies the number of pixels, perpendicular to the search direction, that are averaged at each point along the search line to compute the edge profile strength.
Gap
Specifies the size, in pixels, of the distance between search lines.
Edge Strength Profile
Provides a graphical representation of the edge contrast along the search line. Edges are indicated by peaks in the edge strength profile.
Use the Edge Strength Profile to select a different edge when the step does not automatically select the expected edge. To select a different edge, disable Auto Setup and adjust the blue edge strength line so that it lies slightly below the top of the selected edge peak and above any other peaks.
If the edge strength profile does not contain peaks that correspond to all the edges, adjust the Kernel Size and Projection Width controls until distinct peaks appear.
If the step still cannot find the edge or the location of the detected edge is inaccurate, adjust the Gap between the search lines until you achieve the expected result.
Search Line Index
Specifies the index of the search line represented in the Edge Strength Profile.

Search Line Index
Specifies the index of the search line represented in the Edge Strength Profile.
Edge Points Found
Displays information about each identified edge point.
Strength—Strength of the edge. Values range from 0 to 1000. Larger values indicate a stronger edge.
STR—Signal to threshold ratio for the edge, expressed in decibels.
TNR—Threshold to noise ratio for the edge, expressed in decibels.
SNR—Signal to noise ratio for the edge, expressed in decibels.
Limits Tab
Minimum Angle
Specifies the minimum required Angle in Search Area for a valid edge. The step fails if the angle of the detected edge is less than the specified value.
Example
The following figure indicates how angle values are calculated for an edge. The Step Results table includes values for the following angle values:
Angle—The angle of a line measured in degrees counter-clockwise from the x-axis extending to the right.
Angle in Search Area—The angle of a line measured in degrees from a line perpendicular to the search direction.
The step fails if the Angle in Search Area value is not within the range specified by any Minimum Angle or Maximum Angle values.

Maximum Angle
Specifies the maximum allowed Angle in Search Area for a valid edge. The step fails if the angle of the detected edge exceeds the specified value.

Maximum Deviation
Specifies the maximum allowed deviation. The step fails if the average deviation between found edge points and the fitted straight line exceeds the specified value.
Minimum Short Distance
Specifies the minimum required distance between the start point of the search line and the point where the search line intersects the fitted line. The minimum short distance affects either the first or last search line, depending upon which search line intersects the fitted line first. The step fails if the short distance is less than the specified value.

Maximum Long Distance
Specifies the maximum allowed distance between the start point of the search line and the point where the search line intersects the fitted line. The maximum long distance affects either the first or last search line, depending upon which search line intersects the fitted line last. The step fails if the long distance exceeds the specified value.

Step Results
Displays information about the straight edge found in the image. Step Results are available for use in subsequent steps. Note When you calibrate the image using a Calibrate Image step, X and Y positions are also returned in the calibration unit you specified.
