Although the results of studies comparing the sensitivities of
culture and serology in detecting B. abortus infection have previously
been reported, a rigorous analysis and
comparison of the data is frequently hindered by differences in
animal selection, and in the culture and serological methods used.
In the Republic of Ireland, where vaccination against bovine
brucellosis is not permitted, serological screening of herds coupled
with culture of aborted fetuses is central to disease detection and
eradication.
