The number of returning visitors—as well as overall visitor numbers—is certainly GROWING, along with Sentosa’s offerings. In 2007, 6 million people visited “Asia’s Favorite Playground.” This past year, Sentosa received more than 19 million visitors. Company officials estimate 60 percent of all tourists who visit Singapore spend time on Sentosa. In addition, another 6,000 people living in luxury housing units by the marina now call the island HOME.
The number of HOTEL ROOMS has also risen sharply. When Barclay came onboard, there were six hotels on Sentosa; today, there are 15. That’s 3,100 rooms, with another 700 coming online in 2017 when the Far East Group opens a 3- to 4-star property on the grounds of an old British colonial military parade square (part of a deliberate effort to diversify the range of accommodations on the island).
Sentosa’s visitors are more or less evenly split between locals—who are increasingly taking staycations on the island, in addition to spending free time there—and visitors from OVERSEAS. “Increasingly, we find people are basing themselves on Sentosa for a holiday in Singapore,” he notes, “rather than in the old days, when they used to stay in a city center hotel and come to Sentosa for a day.”
