Augmented Reality is "Alive" in South West Libraries
The Giant’s Story - A dance and digital project to inspire young readers
Designed to complement The Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge Mythical Maze, The Giant’s Story brings together the myths and legends of South West England with dance, film and digital technologies. All 15 library authorities in the South West participated in The Giant’s Story which was produced by
Step Into a Book, a partnership comprising South West Association of Senior Children's & Education Librarians, the Society of Chief Librarians South West, Pavilion Dance South West and Real Ideas Organisation in collaboration with Somerset Film and Second Hand Dance. The programme is supported by Arts Council England National Lottery funded Grants for the arts award, the library authorities and Pavilion Dance South West.
The Giant’s Story www.stepintoabook.org.uk features a digital game where children encounter mystical lands, dance and stories inspired by local legends and is based on the six original counties that made up the south west region. Through such characters as the Cornish Knockers and The Giants of Stonehenge to Devon's Hairy Hands and Dorset's Mermaids, children enjoy a range of activities, inspiring them to read. In addition to discovering books, secret dance moves ,a Giant's Story poster in libraries added to the adventure by "becoming alive" using augmented reality.
